Gran Stead’s Ginger Co takes gold at the British Bottlers’ Institute (BBI) drink awards

Gran Stead’s takes gold in international competition.

British Bottlers’ Institute (BBI) award winnersA Sussex couple are raising a celebratory glass after their handmade ginger wine beat off global competition to go gold in a prestigious drinks contest. Chris and Rosemary Knox entered their Gran Stead’s soft drinks into the British Bottlers’ Institute (BBI) contest for the first time this year. They were delighted when their Dark & Mellow Ginger Wine was awarded the highest accolade by a panel of industry experts. Gran Stead’s other ginger wine, new Light & Fiery, scooped silver.

“The BBI is highly regarded in our business,” said Chris Knox. “We knew we were pitting our drinks against the best in the world and that they would come under intense scrutiny, so to go all the way to gold means a great deal to us. We’re absolutely thrilled.”

The annual competition was established in 1953 to test the quality of beverages around the world. The rigorous judging process by a panel of independent experts awards each drink points for colour, aroma and flavour. Gran Stead’s drinks were entered into the Adult Soft Drinks category.

“The 2012 competition had the largest number of entries for many years, not just from the UK but from Asia, Africa and the EU,” said BBI President Ed Binsted. “For any winner it is a huge achievement as there was so much competition. To be a first time entrant and win a Gold for Dark & Mellow Ginger Wine and a Silver for Light & Fiery clearly demonstrates the outstanding quality of both products as marked by the judges.

“Many BBI winners incorporate the medal on their labels as an endorsement of quality,” he continued. “It is wonderful to see British producers such as Gran Stead at the top of their game - they are very worthy winners. As the products are enjoyed by a wider audience, consumers will thoroughly appreciate their high quality.”

Chris and Rosemary, who produce four soft drinks from Gran Stead’s base at Mile Oak, are now looking forward to the BBI Gala Awards Dinner, to take place at Vintners’ Hall in London on November 1. They will receive their awards from BBI National Chairman Wyllie Woodburn and BBI President Ed Binsted.
