Local ginger firm drinks to its success

Gran Stead’s Ginger Co

A Sussex drinks business is buffering austerity Britain and taking its ginger drinks global with new products, new branding and multiple export deals.

Mile Oak drinks firm Gran Stead’s Ginger Co. has seen demand for its non-alcoholic ginger drinks rise dramatically over the last four years, with more than 20 per cent of its trade now coming from abroad.

Specialising in adult soft drinks (with a nostalgic nod to yesteryear) – a market that has seen volume sales rise from 5.4% in 2011 to 14.8 per cent in 2012 – Gran Stead’s has just launched a brand new Blackcurrant with Zing as well as giving a new look to four other drinks in its portfolio: Gran Stead’s Mellow Ginger(formerly Ginger Wine and Great Taste Award winner); Gran Stead’s Fiery Reduced Sugar Ginger Drink (formerly Light & Fiery Ginger Wine, with ginger extract and chilli); and two Great Taste Award winning cloudy lemonades, made with 13% Sicilian lemons: Traditional Still Lemonade and Lemonade with Zing.

Run by husband and wife Chris and Rosemary Knox from Portslade, the family firm has taken the UK drinks market by storm in the last five years and is now also exporting to retailers in Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and the Netherlands. Its latest deal will see its products sold in 21 stores across Belgium and Holland through upmarket kitchen shop and deli chain Dille & Kamille.

“It’s been an exciting four years for us concocting new products, redesigning packaging and securing new export deals – it’s really been a whirlwind,” says Chris Knox. “But I think it’s because our drinks have found a niche and are offering something a little bit different to consumers and the adult soft dinks market.”

What our customers say

The last time I experienced that lovely taste was in the late forties and fifties and I had given up hope of ever tasting it again.
